Outbreaks




2012 April

• Several people contracted Lassa fever in various parts of Nigeria. Cases have been reported in Edo, Nasarawa, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe, Ondo, Rivers, Gombe, Anambra, Delta, Lagos and Ebonyi States.

• Two people contracted Avian influenza in Damietta governorate and Giza governorate, Egypt.

• One person contracted Avian influenza in Kampong Chhnang Province, Cambodia.

2012 March

• Outbreaks of meningococcal disease were reported in parts of Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana.

• Three people contracted Avian influenza in Badung (Bali), Bengkulu Province and Nusa Tenggara Barat Province, Indonesia.

• One person contracted Avian influenza in Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt.

• Two people contracted Avian influenza in Dak Lak province and Thanh Hoa province, Vietnam.

• Three people contracted Avian influenza in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

2012 February

• One person died of Avian influenza in Banten Province, Indonesia.

• Three people died of Avian influenza in Menofia governorate, Behira governorate and Kafr El-shihk governorate, Egypt.

• A baby also contracted but survived Avian influenza in Gharbeia governorate, Egypt.

• A yellow fever outbreak occurred in the Upper East Region and the Brong Ahafo Region in Ghana.

2012 January

• A yellow fever outbreak occurred in the north of Cameroon, affecting the districts of Guider, Bibemi, Gaschiga, Lagdo, Mayo Oulo and Golombe over recent months.

• Two people died of Avian influenza in Vietnam, one in Soc Trang province and one in Kien Giang Province.

• One person died of Avian influenza in Guizhou Province, China.

• Two people died of Avian influenza in Egypt, one in Cairo governorate and one in Fayoum governorate.

• One person died of Avian influenza in Jakarta district, Indonesia.

• One person contracted Avian influenza in Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia.

2011 December

• One person died of Avian influenza in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, China.

• One person died of Avian influenza in Menofia governorate, Egypt.

2011 November

• One person died of Avian influenza in Bangli district, Bali Province, Indonesia.

• An outbreak of Avian influenza was reported in Dakahlia governorate, Egypt.

2011 October

• An outbreak of Yellow Fever was reported in the Kédougou and Saraya areas near the border with Mali and Guinea (Conakry) in Senegal

• Travellers are advised that there will be an increased risk of contact diseases in the Mecca area of Saudi Arabia during the Hajj, expected at the beginning of November. Those attending the event will be required to show evidence of vaccination before they will be allowed to enter the country.

• An outbreak of Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome was recorded in Russia in October. The cases were mainly recorded in Udmurtskaya republic, especially in Izhevsk, although incidents have also been noted in Samarskaya, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan and Krasnodar. The disease is spread by rodents and usually caught in suburban or woodland areas. The outbreak is expected to last until the end of November.

• Flooding in Pakistan has led to a rise in waterborne and respiratory diseases in affected areas, particularly in the province of Sindh. There has also been a rise in malaria in the area.

• An outbreak of Legionnaires Disease was recorded on the Greek island of Corfu in early October 2011.

2011 September

• An outbreak of Hepatitis A was recorded in Estonia in September 2011.

• On 21 September aid groups focused on the Horn of Africa warned that seasonal short Deyr rains beginning in October will invite major cholera, measles and malaria outbreaks in southern Somalia and north-eastern Kenya. This is likely to kill hundreds of thousands of malnourished victims in famine-affected areas of the region. More than four million people are currently suffering from the food crisis in Somalia and 750,000 of those people are at risk of death over the next four months. Al-Shabaab militants have, on the whole, blocked food aid from reaching famine victims, while Transitional Federal Government (TFG) forces have willfully diverted and profiteered from it.

• An outbreak of polio was recorded in the Hotan Prefecture of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China in September 2011. The WHO has since confirmed the outbreak, which is believed to have spread to the country from Pakistan. This is the first time the disease has spread to China since 1999.

2011 August

• An outbreak of Avian Influenza was recorded in Cambodia for the first time in August 2011.

• An outbreak of West Nile Virus Infection was recorded in Albania, Greece, Israel, Romania and the Russian Federation in August 2011.

2011 July

• An outbreak of Chikungunya was recorded in Brazzaville and Pointe Noire in the Republic of Congo in July 2011.

• An outbreak of cholera was recorded along the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo in July 2011.

2011 May

• An case of Ebola Haemorrhagic fever was recorded in the Luwero district of Uganda in May 2011.

2011 March

• An outbreak of Chikungunya was recorded in New Caledonia in March 2011.

• An outbreak of meningitis was recorded in Chad in March 2011.
